Radical Self-Care 101

Written by Melissa Lloyd | Feb 20, 2023 12:02:26 PM

It was just another day at work, and I was feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. The never-ending to-do list, the constant emails, and the pressure to meet deadlines were starting to take a toll on my well-being. But instead of taking a break, I kept pushing through, thinking that I had no other choice but to keep going.

That is until I hit a breaking point. One day, after a particularly stressful meeting, I broke down in tears. I realized that I had been neglecting my own needs for far too long, and I had to make a change. That's when I decided to start practicing radical self-care.

Now, you might be wondering, what is radical self-care? Well, in short, it's a revolutionary act of putting yourself first. It means prioritizing your well-being, your happiness, and your needs, even when it feels like the world is telling you to do the opposite.

For me, radical self-care meant taking a step back from work and making time for the things that brought me joy. It meant spending more time in nature, reading books, and connecting with loved ones. It also meant setting boundaries and saying "no" to things that didn't serve me.

At first, it felt uncomfortable and selfish. I was used to putting everyone else's needs before my own, and the idea of prioritizing myself felt foreign. But the more I practiced radical self-care, the more I realized how important it was for my overall well-being.

I started to feel more energized, focused, and fulfilled. I was able to show up as my best self, not just at work, but in all areas of my life. And most importantly, I realized that taking care of myself wasn't selfish; it was necessary. Because when I prioritize my well-being, I have more to give to others.

So, if you're feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, or just plain exhausted, I encourage you to try radical self-care. Start by identifying the things that make you feel happy and fulfilled, and make time for them, no matter what. Set boundaries, say "no" when you need to, and don't apologize for putting yourself first.

Remember, radical self-care isn't just about bubble baths and massages (although those can be great too). It's about prioritizing your well-being in a world that often tells us to do the opposite. And that, my friends, is revolutionary.

"Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down." Roy T. Bennett

In case no one has told you this lately, you're amazing.
